My Goals For 2023: Approach-Oriented vs Avoidance

In 2023, my goals have nothing to do with making my body smaller and have everything to do with being stronger in mind and body. My goals for 2023 have nothing to do with changing my outer appearance, but everything to do with creating a mindset that sets me up for success.

My goals are approach-oriented instead of avoidance oriented. I am focused on adding positive action and habits into my life rather than trying to avoid or frame my actions to not do the negative.

Approach-oriented goals involve reaching or maintaining desired outcomes. Avoidance goals focus on avoiding or eliminating undesired outcomes.

For example, wanting to lose weight or quit smoking - this is an avoidance goal as the focus is not being overweight or not being a smoker. Whereas, approach orientated goals would be I want to be fitter and stronger, or I want to healthy and have lungs that are strong.

Although both types of goals are common in our lives and both are functional, one goal-type is associated with more happiness than the other.

So this year, my goals are focused on orientating me towards my intention and are completely aligned with my why, which makes it easier to choose habits that are going to serve my why and support my goals.

Our lives are a manifestion of our habits, and we are the accumulation of what we believe and how we behave, so make sure your choices are in alignment with your vision for your life.
